Where Coffee Makes Community: Sunspot Urban Farm
Fort Collins – A town we’ve all come to love. Pristine views of the foothills, an active bicycle community, eclectic music scene, and home to Colorado State University; but one of the best things about Fort Collins is the people. A vibrant and caring community, residents of Fort Collins are some of the finest and brightest, always looking for ways to give back to the community. While many of these individuals go unnoticed, they truly are the heart of this town.
Every day for the last five years, Rod, a Fort Collins resident, has rode his bicycle over to Mugs to pick up our compost. Rod transports this compost back to his NSA/CSA farm, where it’s used to generate energy through hot water with compost heaters. These materials also aid in the production of on-site fertilizers through vermi-compost and microbial compost. Using various composting methods creates biologically-rich soils to enhance the quality of produce, while reducing the urban footprint left behind. Using 4.5 acres of land, Sunspot Urban Farm grows a variety vegetable and fruit crops to fill the bellies and hearts of 25 nearby families. Sunspot Urban Farm has been voted the top-ranked CSA for many years for their high satisfaction rate amongst farm members.
It’s individuals like Rod who remind us of our roots and sustain everything great about this town - We at Mugs truly appreciate that.
